Which side do I start reading from?
Start from the side with the band closest to the edge. The tolerance band (often gold or silver) is usually a little further from the others.
What is the difference between 4 and 5 bands?
4-band resistors have 2 digit bands, 5-band (precision) resistors have 3 digit bands. Both then have a multiplier and a tolerance band.
